Cancun -- Busy, popular Cancun. You may be surprised
to learn that Cancun was mainly uninhabited less than 40 years
ago. Sporting soft, white sand and brilliant water, Cancun's the
most Americanized of the Mexican resort areas. The Hotel Zone
-- the name of the island-beach strip of Cancun -- offers American-style
shopping malls, bars and nightclubs, and many American and local
restaurants to choose from. Many, but not all, resorts in Cancun
offer an all-inclusive option. Destination

Mayan
Riviera -- located 45-90 minutes south of Cancun airport,
the newly developing Mayan Riviera area offers something Cancun
cannot -- a sense of seclusion. Set along the tropical jungle
and coastline, most of the resorts along the Mayan Riviera are
all-inclusive. The town of Playa del Carmen is nearby, where you
can find shops, restaurants and the ferry to Cozumel. The eco-water
park Xpu-Ha is nearby, as well as the Mayan ruins of Tulum. Destination

Cozumel
-- nearby Palancar Reef has made Cozumel a diver and
snorkeler's paradise. Cozumel is an island off the coast of Playa
del Carmen (ferries run continuously), and has several resort
and hotel options for honeymooners, families, and diving enthusiasts.
The downside to Cozumel is the daily cruise traffic. Cozumel has,
in recent years, become the busiest Caribbean cruise destination.
Streets and shops are often crowded, and prices (shops, restaurants,
and taxi fares) are all inflated. Because of this, an all-inclusive
resort is the only smart option. Destination

Puerto
Vallarta -- Situated on Banderas Bay on the Pacific coast,
Puerto Vallarta is a resort town with colonial charm. Golfing
and watersports are offered here, and you may spot a whale in
the bay in the winter months. The beaches here are nice, though
the hurricane of 2002 did erode some of the sand in spots. A few
resorts offer all-inclusive options. Destination

Los
Cabos -- also known as Cabos San Lucas (or simply Cabos),
this resort area lies on the tip of the Baja Peninsula. I've heard
this area described as "Scottsdale with a beach." You'll
find spectacular desert landscapes, world-class resorts, and golfing

Acapulco
-- Once the gem of Mexican tourism (in the 50's and 60's), Acapulco
Bay hosts many high rise condo and resorts. In recent years, this
town has undergone revitalization efforts, and the result is a
resort city that's once again a treat to visit! You'll find tan
sand beaches, mountains, and a skyline (and cliff divers) you've
certainly seen in movies. Most hotels and resorts here are not
all-inclusive, and you'll find many of your days out and about
in the city. Pacific coast.
Ixtapa
-- this recently developing resort community was just a few years
ago a sleepy fishing village. The sandy beaches here are wonderful,
and golf is quite popular. You'll find some lovely resorts here
as well.
Cruises
-- cruises offer an opportunity to see many places with the convenience
of unpacking only once. Western Caribbean itineraries almost always
offer Cozumel, and many others offer Calica or Progresso (ports
on the Yucatan). Cancun itself doesn't have a cruise port, though
it's striking distance from Calica and Progresso. Many cruise
lines offer a Mexican cruise out of Southern California (LA or
San Diego), visiting many popular resort areas along Mexico's
Pacific Coast. And, transcanal cruises (generally 10 days or longer)
transverse the Panama Canal and will call on port cities in both
the Caribbean and the Pacific.
Ecotourism
and Cultural Tours -- if you're looking for something
definitely not mainstream, consider destinations such as Belize,
Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, and Ecuador, as well
as destinations within Mexico itself.
